The sauna is a great way to relax and recharge, and Skamet stoves are made to bring you joy for many years. Although Skamet stoves are known for their high quality and durability, proper care is essential for their long life and optimal performance. Here is a complete guide based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
1. Cleaning the flue channels and chimney
Regular cleaning of the flue channels and chimney is very important. Soot that builds up in the flue channels must be removed through special openings. The flue gas outlets and the chimney must be cleaned regularly. If the stove has not been used for a long time, make sure the chimney is in order before using it again. Such care ensures efficient smoke extraction and optimal stove performance.
2. Sauna stones — the heart of the heat
Over time the stones wear out, so they must be replaced at least once a year, or more often with intensive use. It is also important to remove stone debris that collects at the bottom of the stove and to replace damaged stones. In P-series stoves the stones must not block the air flow between the firebox and the casing; in S-series stoves the stones must not press against the mesh. Stack the stones so that there is a sufficiently wide air gap and they do not press against the firebox wall. Clean the dust off the stones before stacking. Larger stones go at the bottom, smoother ones at the edges and small ones on top, as they heat up faster.
Important! Some natural stones contain impurities such as sulphur, which makes them unsuitable as sauna stones.
3. Cleaning the ash pan — easy draught
The ash pan must be emptied before each firing so that air can flow freely through the ash pan to the grate. Use a metal container, preferably with legs, to remove the ash.
Remember! Removed ash may contain glowing embers, so do not keep the ash container near combustible materials.
4. Water tank and boiler care
If the stove has a water tank or boiler, these also need regular care. It is recommended to wash the tank from time to time — depending on the water quality and how intensively it is used. Usually at least once a year, and immediately if there are problems.
- Water quality: use clean tap water. Salty, hard or iron-rich water may cause premature corrosion of the stove. If you use a 25 l black steel tank fitted on the chimney, bear in mind that with poor water quality the water may turn rust-coloured and be unsuitable for washing. In that case we recommend choosing a stainless steel tank.
- Mechanical cleaning: if rust spots appear in the water tank, they can be removed with wet sandpaper (400 grit or finer). The tank must then be cleaned thoroughly.
- Water level in the tank: while firing, there must always be water in the tank, and it should be filled as full as possible. Heating an empty tank may cause the welds to crack.
- Storage: if the tank is not used for a long time, it is recommended to clean it, as the water quality may deteriorate. Use water and a soft cloth for cleaning, not strong detergents.
- Frost protection: do not let the water in the tank freeze. Below 0 °C water freezes, expands and may damage the tank and tap. Drain the water through the tap and leave the tap open.
5. First firing
The outer casing of the stove is coated with heat-resistant paint that only fully cures after the first firing. Until then, do not scratch the painted surface, and do not touch it during the first firing — the paint softens. The paint may release substances with an unpleasant smell, so do the first firing outdoors or in a well-ventilated steam room and air the sauna thoroughly afterwards. The first time, the stove is always fired without stones, and throwing water on it is forbidden. The stones are placed only after the stove has cooled down completely.
Follow these simple tips and your Skamet stove will serve you faithfully for years, giving you unforgettable sauna moments.
