Preparing the sauna stove for first use: the key steps and tips

Congratulations on your new Skamet sauna stove! To make it last long and work efficiently, it is important to prepare the stove correctly before first use. This helps the paint cure and prevents unpleasant smells.

1. Paint curing and ventilation

The outer casing of the stove (both mesh and steel) is coated with heat-resistant paint that only fully cures after the first firing. Therefore:

  • before the first firing avoid scratching the painted surface;
  • during the first firing the paint softens — avoid touching painted surfaces;
  • smell: the paint may release substances with an unpleasant smell, so it is recommended to do the first firing outdoors or in a well-ventilated steam room, at the place where the stove is installed;
  • after the first firing the steam room must be thoroughly aired.

2. Firing without stones

  • The first time, the stove is always fired without stones.
  • Throwing water on it is also forbidden.
  • The stones may be placed only when the stove has cooled down completely.

3. Airing the chimney

  • If the first firing takes place outdoors, it is recommended to fit the connection and chimney as well, so that the odorous substances are aired out of them too.

4. Cleaning the racks (smokers)

  • Before the first heating, clean the stainless steel racks (in smokers). During the first heating the racks must be inside the smoker.

By following these simple steps you will prepare your Skamet stove correctly for first use, and your sauna will be pleasant and safe for many years to come!
